GAGS Rating System

The GAGS Rating system used by YeahDude for game reviews stands for Gameplay, Audio, Graphics, and Story. Each game we review is broken down and scored based on these four categories. The exact point breakdown is as follows (updated March 2017):

  • Gameplay (X/2)
    • 0.0 – Game is unplayable.
    • 0.5 – Game will play, but controls aren’t intuitive at all. Massive learning curve causes frustration or rage quitting.
    • 1.0 – Basic control scheme. Game plays well most of the time, but some work could still be done to improve the gameplay.
    • 1.5 – Game handles well. Controls are responsive and flow well.
    • 2.0 – Game handles so well you forget you’re paying a game at all. Great use of commonly overlooked features.
  • Audio (X/2)
    • 0.0 – Sound is complete garbage.
    • 0.5 – Sound effects are present, but not believable. Voice over for characters not present or actively detracts from the experience.
    • 1.0 – Sound design is decent for the platform/time of release. Possibly using some stock sounds, but they fit well in the game atmosphere.
    • 1.5 – Sound effects are well designed and believable. Soundtrack goes well with the game progression and mood. Voice overs are used instead of text.
    • 2.0 – Voice overs invoke emotion as well as convey story aspects. Soundtrack remains with the player long after the game is over and helped to set the tone of the game.
  • Graphics (X/1)
    • 0.0 – Graphics suffice to tell the story, but are poorly put together.
    • 0.5 – Graphics are crisp and clear. 2D animations are clear and concise and flow smoothly, 3D animations and textures provide a good feeling overall. The game achieved the look it was going for with their graphics (cartoon, stop-motion, pixelated, or photo-realistic).
    • 1.0 – This game pushed the boundaries with their graphical capabilities. Photorealism achieved, uncertain if playing a game or watching a movie. Everything is incredibly crisp and well animated.
  • Story (X/2)
    • 0 – There is no story, just do things.
    • 0.5 – Some basic back story, but you’ll have to get that from a wiki page.
    • 1.0 – Story is well thought out and helps progress the flow of the game. Story is explained within the game, likely with a narrative.
    • 1.5 – The story is compelling, characters and their motivations are believable and you really feel like you fit within your role in the world.
    • 2.0 – Deep and compelling story really draws the player in. You become strongly invested in other characters and their stories as well as the world as a whole. Your time spent in this game will be remembered long after you’ve finished.
